For years, I’ve used WordPress software to build flexible, custom websites for businesses. There’s a reason WordPress powers over 30% of the world’s top ten million websites – it has powerful customization capabilities and nearly endless functionality. I’ve used Squarespace before as well, but WordPress has a special place in my heart.

There are so many reasons I choose it over Squarespace. What you decide to use for your own site will really come down to your specific needs and goals.

Squarespace is a great option if you are looking to DIY your website, but if you’re hiring a web designer to create you a custom, functional website that meets your business goals, WordPress is, in my opinion, an obvious winner.

Before we start.. A quick note about vs
This can create some confusion sometimes! is a subscription based website that allows people to set up their own blogs and has monthly fees. has the WordPress software (totally free) which offers way more customizability. I use the WordPress software.

Now that that’s out of the way, here’s why I use WordPress over Squarespace.

WordPress software is 100% free to use, and always will be free. Squarespace costs range from $14 to $40 for the top tier ecommerce package.

The main reason for the difference in pricing is that Squarespace handles your hosting for you, whereas WordPress does not. With wordpress, you’ll need to buy a hosting package from a separate source. Since you can get good hosting for as little as $5 a month, it may actually end up costing you less!

When you use another hosting company to host your website, you have more flexibility. You can move your site to a new host later on if you want to. But with Squarespace, you can’t. You’re basically at their mercy. These differences in hosting also mean that WordPress allows you better control of your overall page speed.

Design Customization and Limitations

This is probably the main reason why I choose WordPress over Squarespace. WordPress is 100% customizable, with endless options for design. When I’m building a WordPress website, I can add custom code to create unique designs for my clients. I start my designs from scratch. This allows me to make sure I’m creating a website with your goals, challenges and specifications in mind.

Often with a Squarespace website, you’re stuck within the limitations of your theme’s design. Beyond swapping out colours, photos and fonts, customization is limited. Yes, you can add some custom code to your Squarespace site, however, I’ve found that the platform does not tolerate this very well and you are very limited.

With WordPress, you can choose from thousands of theme options, or start completely from scratch. Squarespace also has a ton of theme options, however the options are in the hundreds, not thousands.

When you’re trying to distinguish your brand from the rest, having a website that is true to your company is really important. You want your website to be designed around your goals, not confined by major limitations.

Increased Functionality

WordPress offers so much flexibility when it comes to functionality. There are endless products and tools you can use to power your website! WordPress plugins allow you to add enhanced functionality to your site that just isn’t possible with Squarespace. In the WordPress repository alone, there are over 55,000 plugins available!

Plugins can sometimes create conflicts with one another, but this is easily managed. A good WordPress designer will know how to set up your plugins so that your site runs smoothly, with all of the functionality you need to take your business to the next level.

Remember, your website is a tool to bring you more customers, and increased functionality can help you do just that!

Ease of Use

When it comes to ease of use, Squarespace is actually the easier option. This is because Squarespace was originally designed for people who wanted to create their own websites but didn’t have web expertise.

WordPress does have a steeper learning curve, but if you are hiring a professional web designer, this shouldn’t be a concern.

I use a theme that allows me to build and design from scratch but that is very easy for my clients to edit later on. I always provide video tutorials for making updates to your website, and a complimentary 1-on-1 training session.

Squarespace has built-in SEO features. To be honest, they’ve come a long way since Squarespace first launched. However, WordPress still offers more powerful control over your SEO. WordPress is also the go-to option if blogging is a part of your company’s SEO and content marketing strategy.

So which should you choose?

At the end of the day, the choice is up to you. Squarespace is a great choice if you want to build your website yourself or if you are truly looking for something super simple and you don’t think your web strategy will evolve much.

However, if you’re looking for a website that reflects your brand without limitations, if you’re looking to make blogging a part of your content strategy, or if you’re looking for increased functionality, then WordPress is the obvious choice!

WordPress offers functionality, flexibility and ownership that Squarespace just can’t.
